Dave Collingham - K3LP

I’m not sure if many of you caught this special message posted by Bernie of the Daily DX:

“By now many of you may have heard that DXpeditioner, Contester and CQ DX Hall of Famer K3LP, David Collingham, became a Silent Key. On Friday night Dave let his dog outside. After a period of the dog not returning Dave went out in his truck to search for the dog. Upon realizing his dog had fallen through a pond he tried to rescue his beloved pet. A little while later Dave’s wife Rebecca went looking for Dave. She found the truck and then called 911. Shortly afterwards a rescue began.”

My prayers and condolences go out to Dave’s family and friends during this difficult time. Not only was Dave a outstanding DX’er, but a great humanitarian as well. He will be missed.

David was an amazing human being. When I heard of the news yesterday from some of his DXpedition mates I was absolutely stunned.  When I heard of the news about how he died, even more so but knowing David not necessarily surprised. I hope that Rebecca and the family weather through this most of all. I know that Dima (RA9USU) was like a brother to him. Paul (N6PSE) as well. A truly huge loss to the community.

I worked David on several of his DXpeditions over the last two decades, but didn't meet him until last year's Boxboro Convention DX Dinner, where he gave an excellent presentation on the recent VP8STI/VP8SGI operation. Watching David interact with the audience was incredible; he was everyone's good friend, even if they'd just been introduced.

That is sure too bad.  My prayers are with his family. One of the first times I worked him was in 2005 when he was K3LR/KP5.  Gave me a new 15 meter country.

Very sad news indeed. I'm sure I've worked Dave on some of his many DXpeditions. He loved his dog and apparently couldn't just stand there and watch it die in the freezing water, so he made the heroic decision to try to save it. We who love our dogs can only hope we are never put in that difficult situation. My condolences to his family, friends, and team members. To echo the words of N6PSE, "He will always be a hero in our hearts." May he rest in peace.
