Does anyone know where I can get some free detailed (with pictures) instructions  - on the internet for download - on how to build my own balun?  I want to make a 1:1 balun out of PVC, like I have seen in some pictures, but can't seem to find any details on how to make one.

Funny... I was looking at the same thing myself recently... This will get you started:

The ARRL sells a booklet by Dr. Gerry Sevick, W2FMI, entitled "Building and Using Baluns and Ununs". It is THE source for information.

As a bonus, the appendixes contain data from his short vertical articles of the 70s and have some interesting data on mobile antennas as well.

Wireman sells kits, take a look at the W2DU current type balun (my favorite).   All you will need to do is be able to solder and come up with a housing.
