This website has good pictures, and good instructions.  The biggest danger you face is not in damaging your 706MKIIG running on 60M, but rather, damaging it while doing this mod.  The surface mount diode in question is VERY tiny.

Hi, I recieved a reply from Icom about doing a 60 meter mod. and they said they do not recommend any mods on the Icom 706 MK IIG.  Bill

Why of course!  They want to sell you another radio!
The mod they sent me was for MARS, but it involved full TX on 1.8-30 MHZ and above.  The only caveat, which is standard, is that the warranty doesn't cover damage resulting from a mod done by the owner. Seriously, take care and have fun.  It's certainly a matter of indivdual choice.
