I have a perfectly good bencher and when I hook it to my TS-440 the dit paddle doesn't work, only the dah paddle works. This is kinda embarassing because I'm sure it's an easy fix.

On many radios, the key jack is configurable by menu - sounds like yours is set up for a straight key. Check the manual for the settings! on my IC-746Pro, there are front and rear key jacks, either can be set for straight key or paddles.

I don't think the 440 has a built in keyer.

WT0A wins the prize!

The TS-440S does not have a built-in keyer.

Time to buy an external keyer from MFJ; they have a little "Econo Keyer" that I used for several years with my own TS-440S.

The TS-440S doesn't have a built-in keyer.  The TS-850 definitely does.  I have both rigs and think of the 850 as the "big brother" to the 440.

I've been working on a tiny keyer using the Microchip PIC10F200, which would be a complete keyer on a postage-stamp sized board.  If I ever get done with writing the code, I'll have something I can tack into any radio with a bit of sticky tape.
