I had an HW-16 as a teen novice WN8RXA, and bought a Heathkit VFO to expand it. Used it one summer and put it all away. My dad sold the VFO off, and the buyer smoked it...power cable was configured for HW-16 only! What was the OTHER rig you could wire it for, and, can one rewire the VFO (model #?) to serve the other? (A matter of an 8 pin plug, as I recall.) HELP please!

There is more than one model of Heath VFOs.  You are probably talking about the VF-1. It and the others will work with any number of Heath transmitters (as well as other brands of transmitters).  The HW-16 was wired so that the VFO was not active on receive and was "turned on" when the HW-16 was switched to transmit.  The Heath VFOs can be used with DX-20, DX-35, DX-40, DX-60, the old AT-1 etc.  The 8 pin octal connector could be wired to fit the transmitter.

Manual photocopies are available for many old Heathkit products for a nominal fee. To inquire, please have the exact model number ready and call 800-253-0570 or email.

The matching VFO for the HW-16 was the HG-10B.

The HG-10B was also used with the DX-60B transmitter.

If you're saying you still have the HW-16 and need a VFO, I would look for another HG-10 or -10B, which is 10 times the VFO compared to the VF-1 or the Johnson 122 in terms of stability and quality.

The other option is to homebrew a solid state VFO.

A transmit mixer for the HW-16 that uses the receiver's VFO would be another neat homebrew project.
