I RECENTLY OBTAINED A IC-706 (PLAIN JANE)..THE MIC GAIN AS INDICATED ON A WATTMETER, OR FROM REPORTS ON THE AIR IS FEEBLE EVEN AT THE HIGHEST MIC GAIN SETTING.  I UNDERSTAND THAT IS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS RADIO, AND ADDRESSED IN MANY FORUMS ON THE NET. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM THOSE WHO HAVE TACKLED THIS PROBLEM, AND HEAR THE PRO AND CONS OF  DIFFERENT MODS.

We helped a guy here in town with a new one of those and simply setting his speech processor upwards ** properly ** without *** splatter *** fixed the problem.  Read the manual and get some on the air reports, adjust, reports, adjust, reports, should fix the probelm without any hardware mods.  Read the manual.

Seems some of the earlier 706's suffered from this problem, easy fix though apparently.  Switch out 1 resistor.  It's detailed here.  good luck.
