2M Halo Antenna

Happy New Year! Has anyone got some suggestions or advice about building a home brew 2 meter Halo type antenna? As could be expected, I'm having  trouble using a vertical for SSB operations.

Well, the Halo was an omni-directional 1/2 wavelength loop open at the far end and usually fed with a gamma match... are you sure you don't want any gain for SSB?

I have used my 2M, Egg Beater, satellite antenna for SSB with good results.  If you can't accommodate a beam and rotator, you use what you have to.

Ever looked closely at broadcast antennas for FM and TV?

Stacked Halo's were popular in the 70's for FM stations, no reason why that concept wouldn't flatten the donut and offer a bit of gain for 2 Meter SSB service. Do a web search on FM broadcast antennas and you'll find they've moved to circular polarization 'cuz so much of their audience is in a car, but they still stack 'em.

Old-school VHF TV stations liked stacked Bat Wings as they offered good bandwidth characteristics along with a narrowed pattern straight out to the horizon...

Sometime in the last few years there was a nice two meter square horizontal loop ( basically a halo) made from copper plumbing tubing and fittings. The article reference is available on the arrl website and the article can be ordered as a reprint, or found at a library or in some of the antenna books.

there are many home brew designs. Cheap and easy to build. I am using a pair stacked. Certainly not a beam, but good for very solid contacts out to 150 miles with 75-100 watts.
