Duane Fisher W8DBF helped me score my 2nd SX-111 (first was from my mom years ago - Long Lost)
I have both versions.

I have a Tube Lafayette with a glass dial and the numbers are literally falling off. Some people have done some creative things. One guy scanned a photoshop of the dial glass, and put it in life size format. Then you take it to staples and have it copied to clear adhesive laminate.

The problem is that you have to get creative. The indicator needs to be seen, and the plastic laminate needed to be inverse (negative) of the original. After I figured out the whole process, it was easier to either by a parts unit and take the glass (I failed), or sell yours as a parts unit (have not done that yet).

I hope the Hallicrafters has a much easier path.

CONTACT Radio Daze about their Dial Glass Replacements. Located in Mendon, NY, in western NY state near Victor and Rochester
They are bring the printing process "in house" .. and already support some Hallicrafters radio models.

This is great. The only thing is that the glass for the Lafayette might cost too much. I would figure that it would be twice the cost than the radio is worth.

BTW ... just for general information. What probably caused this was the use of products like Formula 409 or Fantastik. Both of these contain Hydrofluoric Acid, which will remove lettering like this. They will also remove or soften paint, remove silkscreens, fog plastic (like meters) and do other nasty things to radios.

Avoid these products on radio restoration or maintenance.

Oh and Vinnie, if you can get a good scan of the dial artwork, you can use clear water-slide decal sheets that can be printed on your home computer. You make the decal in scale and print it out in a laser printer or ink jet on one of these clear decal sheets. They are like the decals we used to use on models when we were kids. Works great and they cost about $1 a sheet (8x11 size.)

FYI
