Another Viking II question:

The Viking II seems to basically work well, but I'm hearing both some hum and, more prominently, the mother of all chirps, both with a crystal and with the 122 VFO.  The VFO and Viking II were purchased as a set that had been used together, and it is set up (apparently) for keying the VFO from the transmitter.  (With plate off I'm getting the VFO output when I key the Viking.)  I also jumpered the VFO so it was running full time as a test; still chirping.

The tone from the VFO itself is pure, no apparent hum or shift when keyed alone.

Also, in order to get any decent drive from the VFO on 40, I need to use it in the "40-20-15" position, although the manual suggests using the "160-80-40" position.  Is this a problem?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Do not key the VFO (there is most of your chirp).  Leave the VFO on and key through other methods.
