Hey guys, wondering what a Johnson Viking Transmitter (AM) might be worth?
Anyone interested? (yeah it's a huge heavy serious boat anchor). I've Even got the manual!

All the E.F. Johnson transmitters were called "Vikings" as part of the company trademark.  (Such as: Johnson Viking Ranger; Johnson Viking Valiant; Johnson Viking Challenger; Johnson Viking Adventurer; etc.)  But two large boat anchors were just "Vikings," with no following word: The Viking (I)and the Viking II.

You should probably do a search on the model you have, using eBay as a reference, to determine highest sale price, lowest sale price and average sale price.  This data is useful.  However, a Viking that's banged up or not fully functional is obviously towards the "bottom" of the list (lowest sale price), while one which looks literally new, no dents or scratches, shiny paint, and works as it did when new will draw the "highest" sale price, as these are collectables.

I sold my last Viking about 25 years ago for $75, which is all they were worth back then.  They're worth more, now.

Oh, I'll have to check, it's stored away at the bottom of a closet, I think it's a Ranger though, I'll
have to check. I know it was working some 20 yrs ago, but I also know it hasn't been turned on
in about that amount of time either. Thanks for the tips/info.

Surely do check, and let us know.  The Ranger is barely a boat anchor, only in that it's size and weight aren't soo high as to make carrying it (by one person) impossible.  It's about 75 lbs and kinda cute.

The dark maroon colored Ranger is the original one (Ranger I), it did not cover 6 meters (although I believe it did cover "11 meters").  The newer, two-tone beige/tan Ranger came later (Ranger II) does cover six meters, and offers some improvements over the original Ranger.

They are both in demand by collectors.

Well, I pulled out the manual -- it _is_ a viking the manual says "Viking I Transmitter Kit"

I also have a "Viking VFO Model 122" manual, but do not have the actual hardware. Not sure what might have happened to it if I ever had it.

The Viking I is very big and heavy, as you know if you lifted it!  Truly classifies as a "boat anchor."

They were sold both factory-wired and in kit form.  The value of a Viking I depends heavily on its physical condition (if it looks new, you're in luck!).  If it's wired nicely and also 100% functional, that's a huge plus -- however, most real "boat anchor" enthusiasts, especially the hundreds of E.F. Johnson equipment specialists out there, can get a Viking I working pretty easily, even if it does not function right now.

I believe values run in the $150 to $300 range, depending on condition.  The manual adds no particular value anymore, since it's in public domain and the entire manual, including schematics, etc, are on the internet.  (People have scanned them and posted them on free access websites like BAMA.)  But having an original manual should add _some_ value.

Yep, it weighs a ton. (almost literally). I know it's cleanly build, but cosmetically there are dings and
scratches. I'm pretty confident that it all works, though as I said I've not had it turned on many years.

Thanks for the info and discussion. Not sure what if anything I'll do with it. Probably continue to hang on to it unless I an offer for it. The shipping would be the killer though!

I fyou have any questions about your Johnson, Dee W4PNT@VAIX.NET is one of the best "experts" on the EFJ Ranger models and does perform wonderful restorations.

If I am recalling properly (gosh, it's been a lot of years!) the Viking I ran a 4D32 tube in the final, and those are pretty doggoned hard to find.   The Viking II (and I think a later version of the Viking I) switched to 6146 finals, two of them.  We had a Viking I in our high school club station, as the Viking IIs were new then, and a bit out of our price range.  The Viking II probably wasn't quite as heavy as the Viking I, or maybe I grew a bit before I tried to pick one up.   There are people who like the Viking I today, if it is in clean or easily restorable condition.  It was lower input power than the II also, which ran about 120 watts input on AM, while the One ran only about 75 watts on AM.  (Input, not output.)   I never owned the Viking I, but did, after high school, briefly own a Viking II, before going into service and selling it all.

Have fun with it, be careful.  

And by the way, the Ranger II added six meters, as Steve says, and also added a PTT system that the Ranger I did not have.   In my "Johnson" days I went through both of those as well, along with several other Johnsons.  All of the Johnson rigs were good rigs, I thought, even some of the well-built kits.
