TS 440SAT filters

A friend of mine is the proud owner of a TS 440SAT. He want´s to improve the reception of his rig by installing a Inrad filter.
According to www.qth.com/inrad there are several filters for that TRX. He´s looking for the 2100 Hz SSB filter but which one gives the rig the most improvement?
There are two 2100 Hz filter for 455 KHz (different shape factor) and one for the 8830 KHz stage.
I would say that the filters for the 455 KHz stage are the best because they are in the first stage.
Am I right?

Both 2.1 KHz filters are wire in. The 8830 KHz filter would be better with strong signals (under contest conditions) but the 455 KHz filter would cut some white noise.

TS440 is an old and not that spectacular radio. Selling this radio and buying something newer (e.g. TS-850) could be a better use of money than buying the extra filters.

Interesting subject. I've never seen any discussion of the virtues of filters in one IF versus another IF, or both. I have a TS-430 and a TS-850 and agree that a costly upgrade to anything as old as a 20+ year old 440 wouldn't seem to make sense.

My 850 has the narrow Kenwood SSB filter (1.8 I think) and I consider that to be a waste of money. Does anyone really need a better WIDE SSB filter?  The Kenwood 270 CW filter was a nice improvement for contesting when I added it 15+ years ago.

How about an outboard DSP audio filter that could be used with his next radio too? And on other modes.

There in no 455kHz filter for the TS-440 except for the factory one that came with the Radio. According to the Inrad web site they only offer the 8.83kHz filters for the 440. The 2.1kHz filter is so much better than the kenwood filters it is not funny. I also own the 440 and 850 and they all have Inrads in them. Even though they are 20+ years old for the 440 a ssb and cw filter will improve the front end and cost a lot less than buying a new radio then installing Inrads in the new radio. Just because a radio does not have DSP ect. does not make it a bad radio I have worked the World with my 440 in the mobile.

Just my 2cents worth.
