Anyone that actually had a casual contact with the ISS crew that was not during a school contact?

Sure.  I have.

I worked ISS in March, 2006, while waiting in carpool line at my son's school.  There was no event/holiday involved -- they were just running contacts while flying over NA.

It was FM simplex, and it sounded like he had a nice pile.  It took a few tries, but I eventually got him.  50 Watts, and my tailgate mounted mobile antenna.  I have also bounced APRS through ISS, when the on-board radio was in that mode.

Card was returned promptly.

I know several other folks who have had similar experiences.
