Sorry left something out:

You might try turning off "automatically search for network folders and printers."

Go to: MY COMPUTER; TOOLS; FOLDER OPTIONS, VIEW; It is right at the top of the list. If you are using a non-networked PC, turn it off.

If you're using Windows XP, Service Pack 3 is supposed
to help address the issues with larger capacity drives
doing what you describe. After installing SP3, you
will want to reformat the drive letter for best results.
Note: Any data on that drive letter will be lost, so
put it somewhere else for the time being.
This seems to do the trick for the Western Digital "My Book" 1TB disks.
