Anybody know anything about these radios? The tk-809 looks just like the old '805, which programs from the front panel, but I can't seem to find out anything usefull about them out on the internet. Specs for the 809 that I could find say it is a 15 watt, 425-485 mhz radio. The reason I am interested is, they are selling really cheap, brand new on ebay and many other internet stores. anywhere from 45-70 dollars. The official Kenwood sites don't mention them...

Here's what little I know about them.
The TK-709 covers 136.000-173.995
The TK-809 covers 400.000-469.995
The microphone is model KMC-20
Features include:
One-port programmability
Compatible with 11 European toneset standards
A-Tone and O-Tone group digit compatibility
200-channel capacity and variable channel spacing
Carrier, non-carrier, selcall, and CTCSS scanning
Remote stun/revive
User-designated channel names
DTMF on-hook dialing
Automatic repeat call
Selcall ANI
Programming is done through the KPG-4 interface using the KPG-20D software.

The radios are still for sale on Ebay. I think overstock.com is sold out. The 709/809 is an upgraded version of the 705/805 with up to 200 channels, 5tone, ctcss, dpl and a scripts that can be written to control the radio. Most any standard 6 pin mic will work. I think the number is KMC-14. It's a dynamic 600 ohm mic but the base KMC-9 will also work and it's a electret with a preamp. The later 8 pin mics will also work if you install a 6 pin on the cable and leave off the outer two pins. Or you can make a 8 to 6 pin adapter like I did. Pin 1 on right looking at the connector on the radio.
1 - BLC
2 - 1 - +12vdc
3 - 2 - PTT GND
4 - 3 - PTT
5 - 4 - mic GND
6 - 5 - MIC hot
7 - 6 - hook (gnd for scan & PL decode)
8 - CM
Depends on what you call American tones. It will do all Motorola PL and DPL codes plus DTMF. It also 16 different versions of 5 tone including the EIA USA standard.

OOPS, sorry for the multiple posts. Your best bet for microphones is probably Ebay unless you have a local Kenwood dealer. Also try the radio programming, Kenwood2way, KenwoodLMR and Radios 4 sale groups on Yahoo as well as any other two way groups.

My 809 is a 100 channel 25 watt unit and uses the KPG-20D software for PC programing. The service manual is hard to understand and you have to write some of the instructions yourself. Once programmed; I love the radio and would like the 709 VHF brother to it.

These radios were initially introduced into the european market and are now finding their way back into the US markets.

Hi u say that the TK-709 covers 136 to 174 but my software only covers 150 to 174 so is there another software version that covers 136 to 174MHz? or do u know of any programming tricks that will give me extra bandwidth?

You have to modify the band limits in the kPG-20D.CFG file using a hex editor..
