Hi Folks,

Between K6ON and W5PO,

which call sounds, looks, and means better to you?

BTW. I don't do any CW.

Something about why I had this question.

1. I'm a ham of region 6 (CA)
2. W5PO was my second choice when applying for the vanity. My first choice was a "6" call.
3. I'm currently applying for K6ON with 50% chance of getting it.
4. I might want to withdraw my app if I decide on keeping my current one.
5. I like both calls, and that's why I am doing a little polling here.

Thanks for any comments you may have to help me on the decision.

73's

Marc

I like K6ON enough that I'd consider switching to it if I planned to live in W6 permanently.

Whiskey Five Papa Oscar is a heck of a SSB call though.  Rolls off the tongue better than Kilo Six Oscar November in my opinion.

I like K6ON better on CW but if that's not important to you...

Anyway, those are my thoughts, for what they're worth.

Hi Dan,

Thanks so much for the comments.

I feel the same way with W5PO.  I go like "Whiskey Five Papa Ocean", and feel it's so easy and everyone got me right with no confusion.  Never tried "K6ON" on the air (not my call yet Smiley), so I don't know how clear it sounds to others.

Hard to decide, K6ON is a "6" call and looks nice to me as well.

Anyhow, I appreciate your comments, Dan.

My best 73's,

Marc

Marc,  I prefer the K6ON. Oscar November are easier phonetics than Papa Oscar. Flows out better to my ears.

You are in a three way competition for it (random assignment). Good luck.

K6ON is better on CW although calls that end in a dash actually are easier to copy when conditions get rough, so K6OA is much better than K6ON.

Phonetically, Kilo Six Ontario Norway is much better than Oscar November...by a long shot.

3/4ths of the world does not understand "Oscar."

Good luck whichever way you go!

I use Norway Three Ocean X-Ray a lot.

So, I'd probably use Kilo Six Ocean Norway which is pretty good...

Not to offend anyone, but....I did not get my old "6" call back, even though it's still available. I think we should all go back to calls in our call area. Just my humble opinion.

Hi Marc,

I went through the same process in '96 and had a ranking system for my choices. All the 4 calls were taken so I went for number ONE.

K6ON requires fewer syllables both when pronounced straight and when given phonetically.

Good luck,

If you are a DX'er, go with the call sign of the area you are in;  it makes things easier for the DX station in some instances and will avoid confusion when they call for specific areas in a pileup. IMHO...

Good Dx!

Good Dx!<

::This is a good point.  I moved and never changed my callsign to my new call area only because I had this call my whole life (since 8th grade) and a lot of people knew me with this call.  If I'd only had a call for a few years, I'm sure I would have changed it, for exactly the reason given above.

Oscar November will win out in the pileups before Papa Ocean.
