We are in the very early stages of setting up a SATERN system with the local Salvation Army unit here.  Given the success these systems have had elsewhere, we are very excited to be part of it and we want this to be successful.  So I would like to ask for any helpful suggestions.

Any tips from people who have helped set up their SATERN systems (ground up)?

Any good general references for SATERN that we could circulate locally?

Any tips for coordination of the SATERN system with existing ARES and MMRS programs?

Yes, I have looked at the satern website.  Just wanted to get helpful input from people who have helped get the SATERN program off the ground in their areas.  Thanks for your input.

One thing I would suggest is making sure you coordinate with your local ARRL EC or SEC.  While SATERN is a separate organization, the EC or SEC still needs to be aware of your plans and activities in their job of coordinating (not commanding) all Amateur Radio Emergency communications in their assigned area.

And they may be able to provide some tips and refer interested hams to you as well!

I am a SATERN member. Been one for many years. The mission of SATERN is to support The Salvation Army during a disaster. You may want to get involved with Emergency Disaster Services. I am also a member of EDS. You can check out my web site in a couple of days regarding my volunteering activities, the website is http://www.radiofred.us
Major Pat McPherson, WW9E, is a great help in getting you started.
Let me know if I can help.
