Getting Started

I'm working on studying for my license (either tech-plus or General) and would like to get a reciever or transciever to be able to listen on while I study. I have almost no money right now, so my budget is extremely small... If anyone has a reciever or transciever they'd like to give/lend me, I'd be quite grateful... Otherwise, just give me some advice on how to go about getting into this?

You're not going to get many takers with no e-mail address and no identity.

If you provide your real name and location, I'll bet someone local to you will come forward and loan you a shortwave receiver to do some listening -- and maybe set you up with a local radio club, where you can attend some meetings and learn more about ham radio first-hand and up close.

When one asks for help, to be taken seriously it is usually best to provide as much information as possible, so others may step forward and offer it.

For example, if you lived in my neighborhood, I'd be glad to lend you a receiver, and help put up the antenna!  But I'm not going to ship one out of the area.  Others often feel the same way.  Tell us where you are, you might have a ham virtually next door helping you out next week...

hi,

I checked with www.arrl.org and only two clubs
are listed for your area, between 20-50 miles
from your zipcode.

so, local help is your best bet.

Your local hs, tech school or college may
have a radio club.

Check out the garage sales in town or pawn shops, sometimes you can find a used shortwave radio.
This would be the easiest and fasted way to listen in.

Or, if you are into building and have a basic
knowledge of electronics you can put together
a kit or from the recent QST (arrl magazine)
issues homebrew receivers.

Remember, all of us here can help you too.
