I owned the original 706 and then bought the Mark II. I love it. It does a lot with less space and has to be one of the best buys around for your money.

You can't go wrong with this radio. Especially since the price is dropping down to +/- $  850.00 !!
I just bought my second G model a month ago, and I couldn't be happier. We have two Mk. II's in sons' vehicles and none have had any shoptime, knock on wood.
I had a FT-100D and I really liked running it mobile.
It had some QC issues in which I had to send it back to Cerritos twice. (I sold it before the warranty ran out.)
I'm not saying the 706 is the best radio in it's class, but I've had a Yaesu and an Alinco and they frankly don't hold up well compared to the 706's in my experience. (And I'm willing to try any radio to find one better.) Just my opinion.
