Tracking down an old callsign...

Back in the days of yesteryear, when I was a junior high student in the early '80s, I was influenced toward Amateur Radio by my homeroom teacher, who was a licensed ham and also the sponsor of our school's club.

Even though I didn't get licensed for more than a decade after junior high, Mr. Steele was still one of the two influences that brought me into the hobby (the other one was a book called "Today I am a Ham," which I read when I was about 9).

I recently decided to track down his callsign and maybe send him a QSL as a thank-you for bringing me into the hobby, but I'm not able to locate him in the current database, which makes me think he may have gone SK.

Are there any historical callsign databases out there where I could find out what callsign was assigned in 1982 to a Larry Steele, who lived in or around Dubuque, IA at that time?

Thanks for any info you can give!

(PS, if you happen to be familiar with the book "Today I am a Ham" and/or know where to dig up a copy, I'd appreciate any info to that effect, too!)

Follow the links for vanity calls from QRZ, on one of the there is place that gives the history of a callsign. I can't remember if it has a name search funtin or not.
