There is a external tuner option for the FT897.. Does anyone know what type of antenna I can use with the tuner ie: 4:1 baulin/long wire or a stick type.. I called HRO and the guy thought there was an issue with the antenna tuner with long wire type atennas. If you own one of these let me know what you are using...Thnks

Have you checked LDG's web page?

www.ldgelectronics.com

<< Tunes nearly any coax fed antenna. Use optional Balun for long wires.>>

This is straight from the web page.

Ooops ...

I forgot Yaesu has an external antenna coupler too, and that's the one you were probably asking about. I'm willing to be it's the same answer - coax feed as is; long wire/ladder line with a BALUN.

I had an 897 and FC-30 (I think that's the model number) bolt-on external tuner made for the 897. It is a coax only tuner, and will only tune a maximum of about 3:1 SWR. It would not satisfactorily tune a "real" G5RV. It has no provision for a long wire or balanced wire antenna. I believe it was primarily designed as a mobile tuner of limited range. I returned it since it couldn't handle my multi-band doublet's wide range of SWR values.
