I have never used a HAM Radio and would like to know the following .. I live in New York State and would like to hear a couple of stations in North Carolina .. would HAM Radio do the trick or am I climbing up the wrong tree ?!?! I know this is probably a dumb question but I don't know and so I ask .. thanks

Your question is a little vague.  Are you asking what you need in the way of a receiver to listen to an Amateur Radio operator in NC?

yeah, we'll need to know if you mean Amatuer Radio Stations (HAM), or Commercial Broadcast Stations... if so, then are they AM or FM? Did you mean Public Service radio ?( police, fire, ambulance, etc.)?

About how many miles distant (straight line as the crow flies) are these stations from you. ?

Do you have space (and more importantly HEIGHT) for any type of antennas? how about support structures: trees, poles, etc. ??

Lastly... how much money are you wishing to involve in this project?  With antennas and amplifiers, most signals can be aquired... but need to know WHICH signals.
