Is there any way to use a Rat Shack or other 12vdc-whatever car charger for the VX-5? Thanks!

The Yaesu E-DC-5B has a 12VDC 2.0AH output. It's filtered for auto-related electrical noises. About $24 bucks at better amateur radio stores.

Yes - there's a "straight" cord/plug available. But it will NOT protect your VX-5 from voltage surges or eliminate any electrical noises.
