Since no CW is allowed on the 60M band, why are some stations on there using "Roger/Over Beeps". Aren't they illegal for this band? (Plus they are ____ irritating)

Illegal? How did you come to this conclusion?
While I agree that they are childish and irritating, they are not CW. All they are is audio tones modulating the SSB signal. There is nothing illegal about this.

The other day someone was claiming that he couldn't tune up on 60M because the tune carrier was not USB. He was advised that he should yell "FOOOUUURRR" into the mike to get a legal signal to tune with. This is rather silly in my opinion. When the FCC restricts operation to USB they are talking about the main communications not tune carriers and over beeps.

I actually respect the "USB only" thing and, when I've "tuned up" on 60m, have used a 700 Hz tone to modulate my rig in the USB mode. Maybe that is taking things a bit too seriously...
But "roger beeps?"
Good grief...hams use those?

Actually, they're a government invention.
NASA used them early on. I've noted that
the USAF Auxiliary uses them a lot on
HF nowadays too. You might be hearing
some of the government stations that we
share the channels with.
In the original form, they were K beeps
not R beeps (for the no coders K means
over). I'll listen more closely to the CAP
to see if they're using K or R beeps.

In lieu of a beep, I've decided to just use the word "ninny" if I hear someone else using the beep.
It takes no more time than a beep, and is more personal than an electronic gadget.

It is my understanding that the "roger beeps" were designed to let the listener know the other party has finished on his end. The reason for the beep is that it is easy to hear under most conditions and just in case the listener is unaware the talker is finished the beep lets him know. SO what is wrong with that concept? It worked for the space program a long time. In some adverse conditions it seems to be a logical means to an end. And it certainly isn't any worse then the "dit dit" used on CW.

The beeps don't bother me in the least. I look at them as an HF/Simplex version of the repeater's courtesy tone.

I just love it when people "invent" new rules. There's not a darned thing in Part 97 prohibiting those beeps.
They are not CW by definition, since CW is defiend as the on-off keying of a transmitter. The beeps are being transmitted useing USB with an audio signal.
Please keep in mind that 60 meters is shared with government users and you might be hearing them and not hams.
