I'm planning a new run (100 feet)of cable for 6m/2m/440 and thinking of LMR 400 coax.  but I see different things about the connectors to be used with this cable.  Can standard N or UHF connectors be used?  (The LMR connectors and tools are expensive!).

No, it requires the special connectors. The center conductor on LMR 400 is a larger diameter.

Standard, mil-spec "UHF" type PL-259s will fit LMR-400 just perfectly; actually, they fit LMR-400 a bit better than they fit RG-213/U or other standard RG-8/U types because the center pin inside diameter of a PL-259 is just slightly larger than the #9.5AWG center conductor of LMR-400 -- while it's quite a lot larger than the standard #13AWG center conductor used in RG-213/U.

Type Ns are a different case.  The center pin of a standard mil-spec N male (like a UG-21D/U) is an exact fit for #13AWG wire; however there are many variants of type Ns, including those specifically made for RG-8 "foam" type cables having center conductors of #11AWG (like Belden 8214) to #9.5AWG (like LMR-400).  You need to use one of those variants.  They usually cost just $1.00/each more than "standard" type Ns, and that extra dollar pays for the special center pin option.

THere is an N-connector that solders on like a PL-259.  This is available from CableXperts (www.cablexperts.com) and is their part number 6633s.  These work great on LMR-400.
