Now that the FCC is dropping the morse code requirement, I would like to go for my General license.

Can I study out of the current test book and just skip the morse code part?

Also, when I pass the General test, will I get a new call sign?

Thanks,

Chris

hi,

Yes, as long as your General book is using the
current question pool.

The practice exams here on Eham are current too.

You can keep your current callsign or apply for a new one,
there are boxes to checkoff on the application.
The VE team will help you with this.

Note that if you were to request a new sequential call sign on your application for your General upgrade, you would simply get another 2x3 as all the sequential 1x3s are gone.

However, you can apply for a vanity call either now or later.  Techs and Generals are both eligible to take up vacant 1x3s via the vanity system.

Ok, thanks for all of your help. I look forward to studying for the General! I just ordered the latest edition from ARRL.

KC8YWO: make sure you WAIT to take the exam until the rule change actually takes effect, which will be thirty days after publication in the federal register, which hasn't happened yet.

If you take the exam before the rule change happens (probably in February sometime) you will have to attend ANOTHER testing session in order to actually get your  General license ... you won't have passed the CURRENT Gen. Class exam, and will be issued a CSCE for General Theory, but it won't be an automatic upgrade after the rule change.

So study until the new rules actually take effect, then go to a test...

Good luck and have fun!
