As a result of listing an antenna for sale on eHam classifieds, I received the following buyer's request:

"Hello, thank you for the prompt response to my enquiry am very much satisfied with the price $150 of the item and so i will  like to make an outright purchase immediately so i will advice that you withdraw the advert from the web.Pls i will like to know how you intend to proceed on this  okay but i would prefer to issue a certified check or money order in US dollars to your location after which my shipper will be coming over for the pick up once you get the money.Regarding the shipping, I have a company that takes care of the pickup of my consignments for me and ship to my destination , you do not worry about shipping, the company will send down a representative to arrange for the pick up.So please i will need both your name and address and zipcode, state to post the payment and would appreciate you if include your phone #, Get back to me with the above payment information.
here is my contact address:
28 Northwick Park,Watford Road,
Harrow,Middlesex
HA1 3UJ,
U.K
+447031840113  But  you can call me between 6am and 6pm united kingdom time for any question.
ALERT...........
I will also like you to know that payment will be comprise of the cost of your item and shipping  and money in upgrading my account with my shipping company in US,that will be coming for the pick up of the item in your location as soon as you receive the payment , deduct the money that accrues to you, and send the balance to the Head Office of the company that handles the shipment ."
Regards,
PHILLIP.A

An obvious scam - is there anything I can do about it?

Ignore it!

This scam has been around for years.

I don't think this means this individual is targeting hams in particular.

However, if you wanted to humor and toy with him I suppose you could make him jump through several hoops so you can be sure his transaction is ..."legit." Smiley

You could start by indicating to him you "need to be sure" he is the actual person wanting to buy this equipment.

Suggest if he would be so kind as to take a picture of himself holding up a cardboard sign up with the the following letters. Hmmm. how about the letters "mypeeweeizsad" in that order as confirmation of his involvement in the transaction? Then have him send you the photo via email immediately.

Then forward the emails and the photograph of the individual to the authorities. Smiley

Yes, known scam!

Don't even pay attention to it.

They wil send you a fake money order, then make you cash it, and send some money to a "shipper" (fake).

That is until the banks finds out the check if fake, and they make YOU pay it back, not until you already send the money away.

Big TIME scam, that is mostly done with cars, but it seems some of these guys go smalltime too.

Some fun to read info here: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

It is the ole scam by the jungle
bunnies in Nigeria.  If they spent as much
time on honest work as they do on scams,
they'd give Black Africa a better name.
I get them whenever I place an ad for
anything, so as others said, it is just not
aimed at hams.   I wish the Europeons had
kept their colonies in Black Africa,
that way they would have some
"adult" supervision.  Well, maybe not
the French Congo, there'd be a lotta
whineing there.  :-)

What racist crack?Huh?

The scam problem comes from Black Africa,
not Arab Africa.

"jungle bunny"

And don't act all innocent like that, everyone can see that you typed it and it makes you look even worse with the false denial crap.

Heck, we've been calling them jungle bunnies
since the 1950s that I personally know of.

I see by your 3 call than you're not from down here,
so what maybe racist up there, may not be down here
and vice-versa.

I never said that I did not say it, if I did
I apologize for denying it and if I didn't, then apology
accepted.  I always stand by my word.

You need to lighten up and realize folks from
different parts express themselves differently.
Like when a Brit calls me a Yank, I take no
offense, as that is what they call all of us,
no matter what part of the USA we're from.

Folks need to not go around looking to be offended
and they feel much better!

I am African American, Ronnie.

Presently residing in 4-land again, Portsmouth, Virginia.

There is no longer a requirement to change your callsign when you live in different callsign areas.

Thank you for the apology.
