Hi,

I recently purchased a new MFJ-8100W Regen SW Receiver,
the wired version from MFJ (not the kit).
Upon receiving it, I put a battery in it, LED light lit, and I then proceeded to hook it up
to a 40M hamstick -- I heard nothing on the 40M band.
I played around with the controls still nothing, no
white noise, nada!

I then hooked it up to a 100 foot long wire, still nothing.  The power led was working, so I know the
receiver was getting power.

I contacted the retailer and they said return it, and
they are sending another out to me today.  No problems
there.  They said this isn't the norm, and that I should have heard something.

I've read the mixed reviews on these units, but still
desire to have and play around with one.  Hey, thought
it'd be a fun Christmas gift for myself.

Still, I ask those of you who may have had one (or
still do) is this is what is to be expected from these?
Are they really that deaf? Or...did I perhaps just get
a bad sample here?

Any help or pointers appreciated.

Happy New Years!

I think you got a bad one unless you have a headset issue. Normally you get plenty of noise on a regen rcvr even with no antenna connected.

Thanks for the reply.  I sort of figured as much, but
it's good to have confirmation.  Just received the
UPS tracking number for the replacement -- it'll be
about 2-3 days before I can compare.

I did try two different sets of phones, no noise on either set.  It was like having a pair of headphones
on hooked to nothing.

Just an update...

I received the replacement MFJ-8100W receiver today.
After installing a battery, and without even putting the case back on, I attached an antenna, headphones and got
some noise...yippy!

Even better, I then tuned into some radio talk show around what appears to be 4.2MHz -- not sure that is the true correct frequency, but I guess it is in the ballpark.

On all bands, except 75/80m'ish, the regen control doesn't seem to kick in until it is nearly 3/4 turned
to right (clockwise).  The manual says this varies by
band, reception, etc.  Is this pretty common play for these receivers?   This will be my last question, I just
want to make sure everything is working as it should.

Thanks Again & Happy New Year!
