I have put a mobile rig in my '97 Camry recently. The rig is a Kenwood TS-2000 which is placed under the passenger seat from the rear. The remote head is placed in the slot area between the AM/FM/Cassette radio and the heater/AC controls. The microphone is on a long cable, and the small Kenwood speaker is placed in the Camry's cup holder when used.
The antennas consist of a spring loaded mount on the right rear fender holding a Hustler HF antenna set. A 5/8 2M antenna is attached to the trunk lid on the forward left. A 5/8 magnetic mount 440 Mhz whip is placed on the roof. The coax lines are routed from the trunk area under the floor mats and inside the bottom car frame passenger door molding and exit next to the right side of the passenger seat.
Power to the rig is supplied by red & black #10 leads from Radio Shack. These fused leads are routed from the battery on the front left of the car, across and slightly in front of the top of the radiator area, then back towards the passenger door. There is a slight gap between the top fender holding bolt and the frame through which I route the wires, then downward inside the passenger door well at the front until it is pushed into the bottom car frame passenger door frame molding for a few feet until it exits with the other cables.
I have bonded the exhaust pipe, the trunk lid, the hood lid, the engine in multiple spots, and the airconditioner lines to the car frame. The ignition noise still runs aout S5 which masks out the very waek signals.
The mobile system is only used on long trips when the wife is driving, and I work SSTV and PSK-31 with headphones and a laptop computer plugged into a 117 vac inverter powered from the car's 12v system.
