I'm considering purchasing a FT 897 with the internal power supply and not the internal batteries. Can it still be powered by 12v when used mobile?

This brochure at:

http://www.yaesu.com/amateur/pdf/brochures/FT-897USAfront.pdf

Ref. "FT-897 System Diagram"

Shows the internal power supply (FP-30)AND DC 12 V as power options over on the right side of the picture.

Yes; it is powered from the external 12 volt receptacle when used mobile. Do note that the batteries are NOT charged from this receptacle.
