Looks like we have a replacement for the 706MK2g in the pipeline. Appeared in a French Ham Magazine. I can not validate authenticity however the sources seem somewhat reliable.

Yes, it appeared on Icom's Japanese web site about 2 weeks ago. My first impression is mixed. The 706 is difficult enough to operate mobile due in part to the size and the number of menus you have to switch between. With even more buttons and 2 more menus, who knows how easy it will be to operate. On the plus side, it does run a few more watts on the VHF bands, but at the expense of a larger main unit. Since most are remoted when installed in mobiles, the slightly larger size isn't a problem. US introduction will be at Dayton. It will be interesting to see what the list price is. I've heard $1,100.

Neat looking rig.  I think I'll wait for them to get the bugs out and the price down before considering it.  My inclination at the moment is to stick with the IC-901A in my car simply because of 222MHz coverage.  HF would be nice to have but I don't take enough long trips to justify it.

I wonder if Yaesu, Alinco, or Kenwood will offer new alternatives.  The FT-857D and FT-817ND are still fairly new offerings.  Kenwood, OTOH, has no comparable rig.  The Alinco DX-70TH is very long in the tooth by now and only goes up to 6m.

Speaking of new Icom rigs, does anyone know if and when they expect to finally bring the ID-1 digital mobile rig to market?
