If you can get a decent RF ground on a tuner, say plumbing or duct work (I am using the latter at home and have used both in the past) - get a piece of wire outside as long as you can get. It will out-perform that inefficient hamstick any day of the week.
As for wire - I use 10lb test Surflon leader wire (the black coated stuff). Can't see it and it works the bands. My "random wire" antenna goes out my window, up to the roof over a 1-story section over the garage, and over to a tree 15' up in the front yard.
