KL 203 amp with 817 rig.

Hello there,
I posted this also in QRP section, but thought to post here as well. I have read of a few hams who use the KL 203, from RM Italy, on their QRP radios. I would like to know if anyone here has used one and what is their workable frequency response range.(RM website is less than desirable on info!) I would like to mainly use it on 20 & 15 mtrs and maybe 40 & 10 occasionally. They are very resonably priced as I cannot afford the Tokyo HP model. Also, it seems to be a straight plug in coax an go type setup, ie no relay lead required, is this safe for the 817 rig? I would not want to drive this amp hard, just around 30-40 watts to be heard in these terrible conditions we now have. Any helpfull feedback will be greatly appreciated.

the problem i guess is the cooling. if u will run it for long time. better to install a fan on it.

hello ! sorry for my bad english ....

i use currently a KL203 ampliefer for several months simply only add a new 1000pF 50V capacitor in parallel of C14 180pF capacitor and you modify the working freq. from 18-30Mhz to 7-21Mhz and transmit with aprox 100W whit your 817

 i agree:  need to use a cooling fan

I would refrain from using that amp on any ham bands. I don't know about VK radio regs about CB amps on the ham band, but you shouldn't use for ethical reasons as you'll be transmitting wide, dirty signals to your fellow hams worldwide. It's poor designed, dirty CB amp, which no amount of "filtering" will clean up. This subject has been covered ad nauseum in this forum and the technical reasons explained by persons better qualified than I. Just go to the "Search Forum" box and type in "CB Amps" or "CB amps on the ham bands".

If you are only looking for 30-40 watts out of your FT-817, take a look at the HF Packer Amp by K5OOR at:

This is a great little amp that covers all the ham bands, and many of the 817 crowd use. If you like, you can easily add a PTT line to it. (More reliable keying under low power input than the RF sensing circuit).
