Hello all,

Yesterday we did some tests with a friend of mine. I took my 817 at
his home, connected the rig to a yaesu antenna tuner, connected
itself to a long wire. The swr was not notch. In FM the output power
readout on the tuner was almost 5 watt when transmitting. However in
usb, lsb or am there was no power output when modulating (test done
on the 20m band, and also on the 2m as well) ! The mic gain was set
to the maximum. Another ham received me in fm but he heard nothing in
usb. What's strange is that the One Touch Tune produces a 5w carrier.
Is there a menu somewhere which has to be changed to allow more power
in these modes ? Are my finals dead (don't think so because it's
working in fm). Do I have to enter the "secret menu" and change
something ?

Thanks for your help,

Hi Stephane,

I would suggest you just do a complete micro-pocessor reset. If there's any setting wrong, when going back to the factory-defaults you're setting will be OK again. If that doesn't work I'm afraid you'll have a problem in which I can't help.

73 and good luck

I did a complete reset, but it didn't help ... I've sent my FT-817 for repair. A ham gave me (temporary) his FT-817 until mine is repaired.

Thanks anyway for your answer.

- interesting problem, as there is only one 'finals' board in the 817 (i have a spare in shrink-wrap as a backup in case anything ever goes wrong with my unit)...

- sounds like a factory alignment problem (Yaesu appears to use computer-hosted calibration on its rigs, and each rig will have different settings)...

The technician at the shop where I bought it found the problem : the IF filter had failed ! He didn't know how this could happen but it happened anyway.
