I built a simple 18 meter dipole (just a so-239 connecter with two wires coming off of it), and after cutting it to leingth with the aid of the 817's swr meter, I answered a CQ call and was told that I was badly "fm-ing".

When doing this, the antenna was about 10 ft from the ground and I was directly under it opperating 5w ssb.

Also, I had no earth ground.

Was the proximity to the antenna interfereing with my microphone? Would a balanced antenna (using a balun) help?

FMing is usually due to inadequate power supply regulation.  Were you using battery power?  If so, and the batteries weren't very freshly charged, that could do it!

Otherwise, if you think RF is getting back into circuits in the FT-817 and causing the FMing due to radiation, try just lengthening the coax feedline and getting farther away from the antenna.  If that works, then you know.
