Elecraft KX1 is probably the best back-pack QRP radio today.  Hard to find another product in the same conditions to compare with.

But, do you evaluate a Yaesu FT-817nd?  Not a kit, but I bought my one second hand on eBay and I have no regrets.  For the money pay and all of its features it is my best QRP radio.  You can fabricate some kit to use with it, like Elecraft ATU or K40 keyer with RTTY module to have fun on RTTY and CW /QRP mode on any HF band.

I also want an Elecraft radio kit; when budget goes to "QRO" levels, hi.

Have you had a look at this?

This kit is currently sold out but there is a new improved version to be available this summer.  It appears very intriquing though with the smt components it might be a bear to build for one who has poor eyesight (such as me).  This might be a very viable alternative to the Elecraft though build complexity will likely be more of an issue than with the Elecraft.
