I have a choice between these two radios....opinions?

Mostly run SSB and CW.

If that's your only choice, I'd go for the FT-840; not because it's "better," but it's far newer and far less likely to have near-term problems.  The TS-180S was kind of a Kenwood "experiment," as their first solid-state PLL HF transceiver, and they were known to have problems.  I had one back in, oh gosh, the late 1970's, and had so many spurious emission problems with it that I finally sold it cheaply, just to get it out of my sight.

The FT-840 is not a deLuxe rig and lacks features that I use often; however, it is modern technology and brand new can be purchased for $499, so I imagine used ones are available for $300-$350, which is a good deal for anything so new.

Mack,
I have owned both and while the TS-180 is great rig
I prefer the FT-840. There are several advantages
to the 840 that cannot be added to the 180. Three
of them are the WARC bands.

Actually, there was a kit put out by Kenwood to add the WARC bands to the TS-180S, and if you look on the used market (here, eBay, qth.com, qrz.com, etc...) you will see that about 10% of the used TS-180S rigs out there already have it installed.  A few will offer the uninstalled kit with the rig.

I agree with most of the comments which prefer the FT-840.  However, you can pick up a TS-180S for about $200-$250, while the FT-840 will be about $100-$150 more.  It is a matter of budget and priorities.

Caity
