I wonder what's up with Phil's Ham radio store? Every time i call them they are closed for some oddball reason or another. Now i see he is closed for some sort of odd reason again. I like having a local place to buy coax and small stuff but sheesh, he's never open! If he can't operate it why doesn't he just sell it to someone that can run it and actually be open?

Wasn't long ago that you were praising that goofball operation on this group:

K9FON: "Phils ham radio store = Great!"

--------
I asked you back then, how could a closed store be "Great!"
(and I never got an answer)

Phil's store is often closed lately. But they do have a website that appears to accept orders. Do online orders get filled?

This quote from Phil's website is hilarious too:
"Our physical store is currently closed for a display reset."

Display reset? Is that a button one pushes?

It is even better! If you read the opening page on the website, it says they are not only closed for a display reset BUT the store is not staffed during the day!!! So if you want to get anything locally you have to go at night! I personally have never been to a ham store at midnight but it might be interesting! Must be great for those who work 2nd shift!!! Get off work at 11pm and slide by and pick up some coax and a new 220 radio on the way home! Midnight madness all the time!!!!

For 2 years Phil was our vendor at the Mid Winter hamfest
in Mansfield Oh. He sold a lot of things too and was well
liked. Then in August he was to be at a newer hamfest in
Bucyrus Oh. He never showed not let the hamfest sponsor know.
At that time I emailed him and ask him what was up and would he be at ours on Feb 14,2010.Here was the reply email.

Hi Don,

As the old saying goes, "rumors of our demise......"

Have we been closed, yes.

Have we had issues, yes.

Are we dead, no no no.

We lost my father July 1st and I have had health issues myself for several
weeks.

So, yeah, it's been a crummy summer and fall.

The store will be reopening shortly after a lengthy reset and upgrade.

We will be attending your hamfest. I wouldn't miss it. We'll be bringing
more gear and our own line of computers designed and built right here in our

store.

Ignore the rumor mill. It's almost always wrong. :-)

Phil Hooper, AB9IZ

LONG STORY SHORT..HE DID NOT SHOW NOR REPLY TO EMAILS
RIGHT BEFORE THE HAM-FEST. HE ALSO DIDN'T RETURNED PHONE CALLS>>>HE IS NOT A MAN OF HIS WORD.<<<< THE LEAST HE COULD DO WAS LET YOU KNOW HE WAS NOT COMING!!!!!

Nothing he says is indicative to a business that is going to recover. He assumes too much of the customer; at best, a they'll manage a couple of intermittant openings, then shutter for good.

hi,

similar to a restaurant that has a sign in the window

"Closed for Vacation"

Beware of making a purchase from Phil.  I ordered a radio in Jan of 2009 and Phil promptly charged my credit card, but he never sent me a radio.  Subsequent calls more often than not went unanswered.  And the few times I talked to him, he assured me that the radio would be sent, but it never was. He was able to stall me off long enough that M/C wouldn't refund my money either.
