Much better than the VX-5R are the IC-T81A and better yet the TH-F6A. Both have superior recieve and have very wide coverage. Rember that with any handheld TXR an after market antenna can greately improve performance over the stock duck. Best of luck to you.

I am looking for an up to date 2m rig (outgrown the used TH-75A I bought right after I got my license) and at the same time would like to have the capability to scan the 450-470Mhz business band when I attend Indycar/NASCAR races. I really cannot justify a separate scanner as I only need the scanning capability 3-5 times a year.

My basic criteria is

2M (4W+ output)
Scanning of 450-470Mhz
PC programmable (cheap or free SW)
Alpha tags on memories (must have for scanning)

Right now the only rig that seems to fit the bill is the Yaesu VX-5R. Are there any others that I should be considering?

Thanks,

Jon Andrews

I would go with the VX-5R.

Doing some more research I see that there are some negative comments about heat etc. on the VX-5r. The other option would be to step up to the VX-7R (it' also a newer model). The extra $70 is not an issue.

Comments?

Thanks,

My VX7R is used as a scanner in my car in directly the method you mention. Works like a charm. Make sure you get a better antenna than the rubberduck that comes with it.
