We tested a commercial big wheel at the SEVHFS conference a few years ago and found it only about 1db better than the smaller loops of several manufacturers. It does not seem to me the extra gain justifies the size and cost differences. A stack of 2 of the smaller loops such as Par or M2 would give cosiderably more gain.<
::Now, that's an interesting comment! And I remember your callsign, you and I used to work in the VHF-UHF contests all the time when I lived in New Jersey 20+ years ago...
L.B. Cebik wrote an article on a 2m "big wheel" (triple loop) design that was in QST a year or so back, and it modeled to have about 4 dBd gain. Cebik was a pretty smart guy and not easily fooled, so I suspect the design might be capable of that; however I didn't build it, I just read the article and remember it.
What was the "brand" of the commercial BW tested??
