I just purchased an IBM Thinkpad 600x to use in my station.  The hard drive isn't any good so I want to replace it.  The drive I am taking out is 2.75 inches wide.  Most of the drives available (inexpensive and used) are advertised as 2.5 inches wide.  Can I use the 2.5 and if so do I need to buy some sort of adapter?

hi randall,

yes the 2.5" will work with the 600x.

Please be sure you have the necessary passwords
to access the system, if you do not, changing the hd will not let you into the system.  The system board has security features and will not allow access with out as many as three passwords.

Below is a link for you to get online manuals and info for your ibm 600x

www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/pageRedirect.do

Just enter your model number and your all set.

Regards,

You've already got a good answer, but maybe this will help somebody else.

The 2.5" specification refers to the platter size, not the outside dimensions of the hard drive.

The above password comments may not apply.  I have a 600x, and there has never been any sort of password set, either for the bios or for the hd.  I've swapped 3 or 4 hd's into it with no problem.

Just plug the model no. you are considering into Google, and make SURE that it will fit that computer.

For example, I have one old (original) hd out of my old 380xd thinkpad (P266) that is the correct width, and has the proper standard connector, but is too THICK.

There is LOTS of info at ibm support.
