Greetings all: Once again I am confronted with the problem of finding a USB/Com Port interface cable. (This is USB cable gizmo that becomes a computer Com Port, usally Com Port 1) This adapter cable facilitates a connection between a computer without a Com Port and a radio or PSK interface unit.
I bought one a couple years ago and was told right off that it "wouldn't work for what I wanted." He was right and I had to return it. I then put this project on "hold."
I'd like to know what brand, name, model number, etc. of USB interface cables that you are being successfully used these days. While I am computer literate, I'm no computer geek.

Anything that uses an FTDI chip set should work fine with all Windows operating systems. Be sure to check their web site for the latest drivers.

Check out Radio Shack. Their cable is in my opinion over priced but it works.
Good Luck.....

Most of the guys (including me) who needed a USB/serial converter have been very pleased with the Keyspan units. I have two single port and three four port units that work great.

I just bought two from Newegg.com.
Rosewill RCW-617 for $7.99 each. I needed an interface from my computer to the EZ-Rotor control in my Ham IV rotor. They have Windows drivers up to Windows Vista.

Here's a list of devices known to work on Windows 7 and Vista:

What is it you want it to do?
What operating system / hardware are you wanting to use it with?
There are a number of devices out there, but without knowing why the initial device you tried didn't work and wasn't suitable, we are all just guessing.

Mni thanks Dino. I checked the reviews on the Keyspan and MOST like it. I'm noting this in my book. Thank you for your help.

WA7NCL:
You're right! Sorry for the omission. I am running Windows XP Home. The speed of the computer is 1.8G and I'm running 2GB of RAM.
At the present time I am using the existing computer Serial port to my homebrew PSK-31 interface. While this is fine, I want to switch over to my laptop, using the same OS and specs. The laptop doesn't have a Serial port. Hence, the problem and question here.

Beware if you are using Windows 7, 64 bit. I just posted my experience with a $19.95 Ebay USB to CAT cable. I finally got it working.
