This is interesting to me. If this phone comes to fruition, this would be a GSM cell phone with a built in VHF Marine Band radio. It wouldn't be for everyone, but I think this is neat. If they expand this capability it could conceivably do the following in the future:

-Amateur Radio 2 meter Band

-MURS legal, license-free off network simplex

-Fire Tone Out capability for EMS & fire service

-NOAA Weather Radio receive possibly with SAME alerting

Someone is always trying to come up with a nitch market, and that's fine. However, some nitch markets are nothing more than cracks you couldn't wedge a toothpick into! That fact alludes far too many marketing folks, because they don't squat about the technical aspects therein.

Let's see.... Apple's new handheld tablet is to be announced on the 27th. Keeping with their advertising slogan, I'm sure there's an app for that! That is, to allow you to talk over any network, any mode, any frequency, anywhere in the world. Yesiree, that will be the latest amateur transceiver. And even Larry, K5END, will have to have one.

You know what Clark? I'm getting old, and so are my fingers. The worse part is, I keep 'transopsing' letters. Maybe I should have taken typing lessons in high school.

Phone with --
-Amateur Radio 2 meter Band
Very small market, smaller that the one with a vhf marine band radio

-MURS legal, license-free off network simplex
Great idea, but probably even a smaller market than the version with a 2m radio

-Fire Tone Out capability for EMS & fire service
Small market, but might work could, produced even charge a premium for this by selling directly to public service agencies.

-NOAA Weather Radio receive possibly with SAME alerting
I think this might have a good chance at success. Especially if the phone could automagically set the alert area based on gps location.
