remove bottom cover
resolder so239 connector center pin wire to pcb
also solder wire for so239 for hf connector

Symptoms intermittent receive/ transmit on uhf and vhf

no power output vhf/ uhf

the connector center in the so239 will spin in the connector body when a pl259 is rotated while seated in connector

probable cause of broken wire from pcb to rf connector on back panel

On my 897/857, the middle pin is actually fixed and does not turn around. That would suggest your plug is broken, and may need replacement; adding a stiffer wire might break the PCB.

Note that the European version has one PL, one N connector; I believe the USA version has 2 PL plugs, perhaps they are different.

this is the nature of this part
some mfgers had loose middle pins
resoldering it fixed it
i resoldered both panel connectors
the 20 gauge hookup wire they use is too flimsy
comon problem on many radios and cbs
