I have an idea for a particular iPhone app.  This would be 100% ham-radio related.  There is no doubt in my mind this would be a hot seller.

If you know how to write an app like this, contact me ASAP.  I can handle the submission/dealings with Apple and any sales & marketing.  This could be huge.

Shoot me an email if you are interested.

Thanks and 73!

Have you done market research to see how many hams have iPhones? In fact, how many hams even have cell phones?

You might be surprised, and since iPhone apps only sell for .99, you may not be able to pay back development costs.

I'm on all the smartphone developer programs. A few years back, I developed a ham app for the Windows CE platform, gave it away for free and only 700 people downloaded it.  Maybe that will help you with your market reseach.

You bring up some outstanding points.  I personally know a lot of hams with iPhones, but that is light years away from a scientific survey.

This project would be described in three parts in order or priority.

1.  Do it for the love of and the good of Amateur Radio.

2.  Do it for the love of and the good of Amateur Radio.

3.  Possibly make a few bucks.

Frankly, this idea is already a proven winner in other areas of Amateur Radio.  I truly believe MANY hams would specifically purchase an iPhone (when it came time to get a new phone) because of this app.  Since iPhones have come down to the $100 level and considering the fact they are just plain cool and also very useful in non-ham radio applications, I think this would work.

I am EXTREMELY active in the ham community in Arizona, and I can honestly only name one ham (I know of) without a cell phone.  Even he is now buying a phone, because the last wide-coverage auto patch is now gone from this area.

I actually did not have an iPhone until a couple months ago.  I was a late adopter.  I am now wondering what in the heck I was thinking before.  I am not easily impressed by the latest and greatest electronic items because of the fact I have been in Amateur Radio so long and am used to technology.  But, I can honestly admit, the iPhone is the best and most useful (non-ham) electronic device I have ever seen.  I was absolutely blown away.  This comes from a guy (me) that is a PC user all the way.  I do not own and would not likely ever own a Mac purely because I like speaking the same computer language as 85% of the world.  This is my first Apple device.

You should see the large number of hams apps already available.  The APRS app is really good.  It is called (love this creative name)  "I B C N U".

Anyway, if anyone wants to take the plunge, I would be pleased to hear from you.

There is a market for amateur radio iPhone apps.  I have a Morse Decoder app in the iPhone app store priced at well above 99 cents, and it is selling fairly well.  My free Morse code iambic keyer app has gotten thousands of downloads from all around the world.

 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/morsedecoder/id313071325?mt=8
 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/morsekey/id312260358?mt=8

I'm currently looking for amateur radio reviewers with currently active blogs or review web sites.  Redemption coupons are available to reviewers in the U.S.

Really? If you had a bad ticker, would you trade your iPhone for an implanted cardiac pacemaker? Or is keeping your heart beating not as "useful" as getting DX Spots on your cell phone?
