Having   recently got very interested in improving my ssb audio for both dx and local qsos just come across   various websites offering downloads for computer based tx-rx graphic equalizer`s etc, obviously working out vastly cheaper than adding various audio harwdare units just wonder if software off this type really can match the performance off harware offering to do the same job ??

Yes, I tried that before. With VST or DX plugins you can do miracles with your audio.
The key is low latency soundcard to process audio realtime and modern computer.
