I have recieved this same message when attempting to connect my 718 directly to my computer for programming.  I found an option in the computer software that attempted to connect with the radio using every possible combination of com port and baud setting untill successful.  This worked for me but as the process was automated I did not catch the settings that worked.

Hope this helps a bit

?? I have a Icom IC-718 working with Ham Radio Deluxe with no problem once you get your com port right. I do use USB to the Icom. Make sure you have the IC-718 in Comp mode on your display. It work OK with Rigblaster pro and Rigblaster and other cards that I have got off E-bay.
