Where's the noise?

I have recently purchased an interface cable and connected my IC-706 mkIIG to my pc.  Ham Radio Deluxe is working nicely; it's great to be able to control the rig from the computer keyboard.  Only thing is, I have no idea about how to pass audio in and out.  Under the tools menu in HRD there's an option to select sound cards; I have selected my sound card of choice but nothing seems to happen except for that sound card not being available to any applications whatsoever thereafter.  Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.  My sound card is an m-audio delta audiophile 2496.  I have the odd circumstance of a combination recording studio/ham shack.  My recording console is connected in and out to the m-audio via s-pdif.  If ham radio deluxe can see this sound card why can't I just have it send and receive audio to it?  I'm sure I'm pulling a klutz on this somewhere.  Do I actually need some sort of audio interface separate from the cat interface?  If so, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Please bare in mind as a blind person who doesn't get along well with saugtering irons :.) project kits are not an option, unless some kind soul...:.)  Thanks much in advance 73, Jim vo1rv

Yes.

The CAT interface is a low baud rate serial interface for command, control, and radio operating info only.

There are a fair number of commercial audio interfaces available.  

The Rigblaster Plug and Play has BOTH a USB serial interface and an audio interface, so it duplicates the function of your existing cable, but it does indeed seem to ship ready to plug in:

There are probably less expensive options available from other suppliers.  Maybe some others who are more familiar with other offerings can chip in.
