I used to work Europe from Ohio using a rain gutter and a tuner. Not ideal, and I'm not necessarily suggesting it, but I'm just saying that there's always a way. Do lots of searching on the internet, and certainly buy the ARRL's stealth antenna book. All it really takes is some imagination.

Check out this month's issue of CQ Magazine.
The article about the CQ Marathon contest. The author uses an antenna in his attic and managed to work over 100 DXCC countries in a couple months. He doesn't give any details about the antenna, but it shows what can be done without even putting an antenna outside the house.
