I have two question regarding the sequential number that is given with an RST during a contest, like 59-001:

1. I looked through N1MM (which I have) and the web site for ACLog (http://www.n3fjp.com/) trying to find out if the logging software will automatically display and increment a counter to use for contests. It wasn't apparent that either software program had this feature? Am I wrong about that? If so, what is it called and how do I activate it?

2. How should the RST+Increment be logged, as "59001" or "59-001" or does it not matter? When the logs are uploaded to the contest organizer, is it not important that this information be intact and follow a certain format?

Both pieces of software automatically implement the counter.  For the N3FJP, you must be using the appropriate contest log software not the general logging program.  For N1MM, you must tell it which contest you are running.

In each program, you enter the RST (59) in the RST box and the serial number in the serial number box.  Both programs then allow you to generate the needed cabrillo file in the proper format.  In the cabrillo file, the RST and serial number are separated by a space.  They are not run together or hyphenated.

Just in case I wasn't clear, the counter is displayed and incremented automatically.  You don't have to "activate" it.

Can the N1MM automatically generate a TQ8 file for LoTW?

No.

But then again, no logging program will do that.  That's what TQSL is for.  You create the ADIF file with N1MM, then follow the instructions for TQSL.

Thanks, Bob.  I didn't think so, but I've heard several claims that "my logging program automatically converts" and thought I'd ask.

The N1MM instructions say it is possible to use the program for "some general logging," but I have not figured out how to do this.  When you try to start a new log, you have to select which contest.  How to use as a general, non-contest logger?  Or do I need another program?  I'd like to have the one that, when I enter a call, it tells me the ops name and the last time we worked.

Some logging software can upload to LOTW by first generating the adi and then invoking TQSL from within the program itself.  This makes it seem like the program is uploading directly to LOTW. It's simply automating the two steps for you.

In N1MM, you go to the Contest setup page and set the exchange to "001" if it's a "serial number" contest.

It's automatic after that.

...and for general logging, use the "DX" contest.  It will pre-fill the op's name if you've worked him before.  It will show previous QSO dates, times, and bands in the "Log" window.  The log window has two panes.  The lowermost pane shows previous QSOs.  You need to make sure you set up the log window (by dragging the lower boundary of the upper pane) so that you can see both panes.  Once it's set, it's set forever.

N1MM will handle the logging part just fine.  For QSL card management, label printing, award tracking, LoTW, etc, just export an ADIF and pull the data into general-purpose logger.  I use DXKeeper for those other functions.
