I have a log from the VHF Sweepstakes with 1 dupe in it.  The guy called me twice, and I accidentally entered him as a K1 instead of a W1.  So I corrected the Cabrillo log changing his earlier entry to his correct call , and I now have a dupe.

Is there a convention as to which contact comes out, or should I leave the dupe in?  I don't think I've  ever submitted a log with an obvious dupe in it.

There is no penalty for dupes, keep them in the log.  There are any number of reasons why they may occur from time to time.

There used to be a penalty for dupes but with computer logs, no more penalty.  I don't know why some ops still send qso B4 and won't work dupes.  If the calling station had him in the log, he wouldn't be calling!  Just work dupes like any other qso and don't worry about them.

I agree completely about working dupes. I like to casually work contests and only do search and pounce with usually about 100 to 200 QSOs max. CW and RTTY only, no SSB. I hear who I'm calling before I call so I get the call correct and I usually listen to the next station he works to verify his info. I use WriteLog and MixW so I can easily avoid dupes. Last night on the CQ WW 160M contest I was told that I was a dupe. I wanted to reply that he was not in my log but I was not given a chance. He just proceded to QRZ for more callers. So by trying to avoid a dupe he now insured himself of a busted entry and lost out on new points by not working me.

We're not using paper dupe sheets anymore. Dupes can't be happening that often. Work the dupes and let the scoring software take care of it after submittal.

Ummm... since when do dupes not count against you in ARRL contests?  This comes directly from the ARRL web site under "Contests" and the tab for "Disqualifications and Penalties".

"For each duplicate contact that is claimed for credit and each miscopied call sign that is removed from the log by HQ, three additional contacts will be deleted as a penalty. The penalty will not be considered part of the 2% disqualification criteria."

Further, there is this little tid-bit:

"An entry with more than two-percent duplicate contacts left in the log or an entry in which more than 2% "rubber clocking" (altering the actual time to increase the operating time so that it is greater than the allowable limit) is detected will be automatically disqualified. "

That seems like a pretty good reason not to submit logs with dupes in it.  Here is a link to the page:  http://www.arrl.org/contests/dq.html

>"For each duplicate contact that is claimed....
>"An entry with more than two-percent....

This is holdover stuff from when paper logs were the norm.  If you use computer logging (and most do these days) your software automatically takes care of not claiming credit by scoring duplicate QSOs with zero points.

I've been submitting electronic logs since the late 80s/early 90s when computer logging took off.  I've submitted hundreds of logs for all sorts of events to many different sponsors, including all the major sponsors.  I log all QSOs and I have never been docked for leaving dupes in my log.

K4GUN, you missed 7.2.1
7. Disqualification and Penalties:

7.1. If the claimed score of a participant is reduced by 2% or more, the entry may be disqualified. Score reduction does not include correction of arithmetic errors.
7.2. Score reduction may be made for taking credit for unconfirmed QSOs or multipliers, duplicate contacts or other scoring discrepancies.

7.2.1. Duplicate QSOs in electronic log file are considered zero point QSOs and are not penalized.

7.3. If a paper entry with more than two-percent duplicate contacts left in the log is detected, it will be automatically disqualified.
7.4. If an entry in which more than 2% "rubber clocking" is detected, (altering the actual time to increase the operating time so that it is greater than the allowable limit) it will be automatically disqualified.

Thanks guys.  Looks like the ARRL needs to clean up its web site a bit to eliminate the contradictions.
